The aim of the Paediatric Emergency First Aid qualification is to enable learners to attain the knowledge and competencies needed to deal with a range of first aid situations which can arise when working with or looking after children.
Learners should be able to demonstrate the practical administration of safe, prompt, effective first aid in emergency situations with an understanding of the role of the paediatric first aider.

Course Content

UNIT 1

On completion of this course students will be able to:

1. Understand the role of the paediatric
2. Assess an emergency situation and act safely and effectively.
3. Provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally.
4. Provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally.
5. Provide first aid for an infant and a child who has a foreign body airway obstruction.
6. Provide first aid to an infant and a child who is wounded and bleeding.
7. Know how to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock.

UNIT 2

On completion of this course students will be able to:

1. Provide first aid to an infant and a child with a suspected fracture and a dislocation.
2. Provide first aid to an infant and a child with a head, a neck and a back injury.
3. Provide first aid to an infant and a child with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose.
4. Provide first aid to an infant and a child with a chronic medical condition or sudden illness.
5. Provide first aid to an infant and a child who is experiencing the effects of extreme heat and cold.
6. Provide first aid to an infant and a child who has sustained an electric shock.
7. Provide first aid to an infant and a child with burns or scalds.
8. Provide first aid to an infant and a child who has been poisoned.
9. Provide first aid to an infant and a child who has been bitten or stung.

Who Should Attend

This course is for people working with younger children – those up to eight years old – or working towards an NVQ in Childcare and Education.

This training is ideal for Childminders, Nursery and School staff (dealing with Foundation Stage) and anybody who deals with children and wants a more in-depth course.

Qualification

There are two methods of assessment to be used to ensure that learners have gained the required knowledge, skills and understanding relating to Paediatric First Aid:

  • Practical assessment

This is observed by the Trainer throughout the course.

  • Theoretical assessment

This consists of a multiple choice written assessment paper.
